Components of physical fitness

Physical fitness is not confined to the proper functioning of your limbs. It is a state in which the body including senses, brain, muscles, and all other organs remain fit. The benefits of physical exercises are basically divided into three categories:

Brain is known as the central organ of our nervous system. Physical training is very important in a student's life because during his studies, he remains surrounded by mental pressure. A healthy body is the one in which there is low quantity of fats whereas, in an unhealthy body the quantity of fats is in excess. In simple language, we can define cardiovascular endurance as the ability of the body to perform the same set of exercise for a particular time span. Another name of cardiovascular endurance is 'stamina'. It is the ability of the heart, lungs and blood vessels to transfer blood throughout the body. Some exercises which determine the level of cardiovascular endurance are running, walking, cycling, swimming, skate boarding, skating, etc.

Flexibility is defined as the ability of the body to bend without breaking. It is an important quality that should be present in every sportsperson as it makes the body agile and prevents the muscle injuries. Flexibility can be increased by practicing yogic exercises, stretching, splits and sit-and-reach. 

4). Muscular Strength

It is the amount of force a single  muscle or group of muscles can produce in a single effort (maximal effort). It is measured in dynes. It is an important component as it helps in determining the energy with which the body can accomplish certain tasks. Some exercises to measure the level of muscular strength in the body are squats, bench press, bicep curls, throwing shotput, discus throwing etc.

Muscular endurance is the ability of muscles to exert force against resistance or to sustain repeated contractions against a resistance for a particular time span. In simple language, if you are repeating the same set of exercise for some time in which a particular type of muscles are involved, then you are using your muscle endurance. Exercises that measure the test the level of muscular endurance in an individual are lifting weights multiple times, sit ups, push ups, throwing pitches in baseball, etc. 

There are some skill components in addition to these five basic components of physical fitness. They are:

  • Speed

It is the ability of our body to move quickly in various circumstances. It is very beneficial in fast paced sports such as football, basketball etc.

  • Agility

It is the ability of the body to move with ease without getting injured. It is used while making special moves in sports.

  • Balance

Balance is required so that the body can remain in a position. It is a prerequisite in sports such as discus throw, shotput throw etc.

  • Co-ordination

Sports and physical training requires co-ordination as it is the ability to move two or more body parts in control, smoothly and efficiently. Sports such as archery and shooting demand co-ordination of a great level.

Physical activities affect all of these components and take them to a new level and makes an individual mentally sound and physically fit.
